Seasonal Depression: |
What is seasonal affective disorder (SAD)?
Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is a type of depression that occurs during the same season each year. It is sometimes called winter depression or seasonal depression and affects everyone differently. According to the article linked below about 5% of the U.S population experience seasonal depression. Of this 5%, four out of five are women. The main age of people who experience this are between the ages of 20-30; however, you can experience it earlier in life. It can also affect people who live farther from the equator or have other mood disorders, such as depression. The cause of seasonal depression is due to the reduced level of sunlight during the fall and winter season, which upsets your "biological clock" controlling your sleep-wake pattern. Some common symptoms may include feeling sad, moody, or anxious; loss of interest in activities; eating more or gaining weight; and feeling tired. There are ways to help combat seasonal depression such as light therapy, antidepressants, vitamin D supplements, etc. Seasonal depression is different for everybody. A friend of mine shared their personal experience: I feel so alone and like I’m outcasted from the rest of the world. Especially during the holidays when everyone is supposed to be “happy” and you just have to act that way when in reality you just want to stay where you feel comfort, which for me is home. Each day is always a struggle. Day to day, I have to act like everything is fine and put on a “happy” face when in reality I’m having constant fights in my head and just want to crumble and cry. It makes getting out of bed harder and sleeping even harder because your brain doesn’t know when you need to be up due to the sunshine not coming through until 9-10 am depending on where you live. https://www.mhanational.org/conditions/seasonal-affective-disorder-sad https://www.uofmhealth.org/health-library/hw169553#hw169555 |
